Sarah's Midnight Anthology|
|
Sarah Nock has loved
poetry since she was a child, and over the years little wisps have clung
to her and settled, a line here, a stanza there. She is not an authority
on poetry, she is the first to admit that, and has not read widely, but
she has been receptive. This anthology is really a companion volume to her
popular “Ponderings on Parkinson’s” in which she reflects on her twenty
years’ experience of that malady, and realises the tremendous power of the
spoken word to help ease pain and lighten spirits.
So now
it was time to call them in, those verses which had slipped into her
consciousness. With the help, among many others, of The Dictionary of
Quotations and the Internet, they were gathered together into a deeply
satisfying collection: classics or almost unknown, funny, sad or just
plain beautiful. There to defend against those bad times when medication
is low, sleep won’t come, pain kicks in — times when poetry is the only
balm. Poems
should be read aloud, that is the nature of them so grab anyone, old or
young, related or startled, and set them to reading. You will be doing
them an inestimable favour, too. For all who have to grapple with life’s midnight hours, for whatever reason, this is a most pleasing collection and one that will ultimately enhance their lives . |
